My US patent application concerning use of the dyes found in blueberries and cherries received favorable US Patent first office action. We are continuing further research with Myron Spector at Harvard to learn more about the nature of these dyes called anthocyanins and anthocyanidins. They appear to have potential to cause the human joint lining to make a growth hormone, IGF-1, that has positive effect on articular cartilage. They are powerful antioxidants, so as to preserve cartilage cells. In addition as we look forward to potential clinical application, there is a antimicrobial potential as well. We should have further results in a couple of months to solidify the strength of the patent application.
